    Our Vision

At Chatsworth and Burnt Oak, we are proud of and committed to our shared values of kindness, respect and inclusion. At Burnt Oak Junior School, we build upon the strong foundations laid at Chatsworth by fostering aspirational dreams and supporting pupils to become confident, independent and proactive learners.

Our curriculum and ethos challenge pupils to thrive, embrace diversity and champion empathy. Working in close partnership with our families and wider community, we are proud to empower the next generation as compassionate, resilient and responsible members of society.

Curriculum Rationale – Championing Happy, Motivated Learners to Achieve Their Best

At Burnt Oak Junior School, we believe every child deserves a curriculum that inspires curiosity, builds confidence and encourages ambition. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that children enjoy learning, feel motivated to challenge themselves and are supported to achieve their full potential.

We want our children to be:

    • Happy – feeling safe, valued and included, enjoying school and developing a love of learning.

    • Motivated – having high aspirations, embracing challenges and taking pride in their achievements.

    • Engaged – being curious, enthusiastic and actively involved in meaningful learning experiences.

Through a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum, we develop children's knowledge and skills alongside their independence, resilience and creativity.

Rooted in our shared values of kindness, respect and inclusion, our curriculum celebrates individuality, encourages children to believe in themselves and prepares them to thrive both in school and beyond.

Curriculum Intent – What We Want Children to Learn

Our intention is to provide a high-quality education that equips every child with the knowledge, skills and personal qualities needed to thrive.

We want our children to develop secure foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, alongside a rich understanding of the wider curriculum. We believe that every subject has an important place in a child's education and provides opportunities to discover new interests, talents and ambitions.

    Our curriculum aims to:

    • Develop confident and independent learners who are curious, motivated and willing to challenge themselves.

    • Build secure knowledge and understanding through carefully sequenced learning that enables children to make connections and remember what they have been taught.

    • Promote high aspirations by encouraging children to recognise their potential, celebrate their achievements and take pride in their learning.

    • Develop resilience and perseverance so that children approach challenges positively and recognise that mistakes are an important part of learning.

    • Celebrate diversity and inclusion by helping children understand, appreciate and respect different cultures, beliefs and experiences.

    • Encourage creativity and critical thinking through opportunities to question, investigate, explore and solve problems.

    • Prepare children for life beyond Burnt Oak by developing the personal, social and emotional skills needed to become responsible and compassionate members of society.

Our curriculum also promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

Above all, we want children to leave Burnt Oak with a love of learning, confidence in their abilities and the ambition to achieve their goals.

Curriculum Implementation – How We Teach

Our curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced so that children build on their previous learning as they move through Years 3 to 6.

We recognise the importance of developing secure knowledge, understanding and vocabulary in every subject. Teachers revisit key concepts, make connections with prior learning and provide opportunities for children to apply what they know in different contexts.

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is supported by carefully selected schemes of learning that provide consistency, progression and high expectations.

    Our Curriculum Approaches

    • English – CUSP Reading, Writing and Spelling, with Little Wandle Rapid Catch-up providing additional phonics support where needed.

    • Mathematics – White Rose Maths, developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach.

    • Science – CUSP Science, developing scientific knowledge alongside enquiry, investigation and practical skills.

    • History and Geography – CUSP, building secure subject knowledge, vocabulary and an understanding of people, places and events.

    • Art and Design & Design and Technology – CUSP, developing creativity, practical skills and an appreciation of design and artistic expression.

    • Computing – the National Centre for Computing Education curriculum, supported by Kapow for online safety.

    • Physical Education – PE Pro, developing fundamental movement skills, physical confidence, teamwork and healthy lifestyles.

    • Music – Sing Up, developing musical knowledge, creativity, performance and appreciation.

    • French – Language Angels, building confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in another language.

    • PSHE – Jigsaw, supporting children's personal development, emotional wellbeing, relationships and understanding of themselves and others.

    • Religious Education – the 2026 Bexley Agreed Syllabus, encouraging understanding and respect for different religions and worldviews.

Although subjects are taught with their own knowledge, skills and vocabulary, we encourage children to recognise meaningful connections between different areas of learning.

Our teachers use a range of approaches, including explicit teaching, modelling, discussion, practical experiences and independent activities, to support children in developing confidence and understanding.

We have high expectations for all learners and recognise that children may need different levels of support or challenge to achieve their potential.

    An Inclusive Curriculum

Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at Burnt Oak Junior School.

We believe that every child should have access to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum, regardless of their individual needs or starting points.

Teachers adapt teaching, resources and activities to remove barriers to learning whilst maintaining high expectations. Through careful assessment, targeted support and appropriate challenge, we aim to ensure that all children can participate, make progress and experience success.

We work closely with families and external professionals where appropriate to ensure that children receive the support they need to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

    Learning Beyond the Classroom

We believe that some of the most memorable learning experiences happen beyond the classroom.

At Burnt Oak Junior School, we provide a range of educational visits, visitors, workshops, performances, sporting opportunities and enrichment activities that bring learning to life.

These experiences help children make connections between their classroom learning and the wider world, develop confidence and discover new interests.

    The Pioneer Passport

As part of The Pioneer Academy, we embrace the Pioneer Passport, which provides children with opportunities to experience activities and places they may not otherwise encounter.

Our Key Stage 2 passport, Eleven by Eleven, encourages children to enjoy a range of experiences before leaving primary school. These include visiting cultural and historical landmarks, exploring the natural environment, cooking, performing and trying new activities.

The Pioneer Passport is an important part of our commitment to broadening children's horizons, developing cultural awareness and ensuring that every child has opportunities to experience the wider world.

We want children to leave Burnt Oak not only with strong academic foundations but also with lasting memories, new interests and the confidence to embrace unfamiliar experiences.

Curriculum Impact – How We Know Children Are Learning

We want every child at Burnt Oak Junior School to make strong progress from their individual starting points and develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for future success.

Assessment is an important part of our teaching. Teachers use questioning, discussion, observation, children's work and formal assessments to understand what children know, identify misconceptions and plan appropriate next steps.

We recognise that successful learning is about more than completing a task. We want children to remember important knowledge, explain their understanding and apply what they have learned with increasing confidence and independence.

Where children need additional support, we provide timely adaptations and targeted interventions to help them overcome barriers and make progress.

We evaluate the impact of our curriculum through children's learning, assessment information, pupil voice and regular monitoring of teaching and standards.

Our ambition is for children to:

    • Achieve well academically and be prepared for the next stage of their education.

    • Develop secure knowledge, understanding and skills across the curriculum.

    • Become confident readers, writers, mathematicians and communicators.

    • Demonstrate independence, resilience and a willingness to learn.

    • Show kindness, empathy and respect towards others.

    • Appreciate diversity and understand their responsibilities within the wider community.

    • Develop interests, talents and aspirations that extend beyond the classroom.

    Ready for the Next Chapter

Our curriculum is designed to give children the strongest possible foundations for their future.

Building on the learning and experiences provided at Chatsworth Infant School, we support children throughout their junior school journey, helping them grow in confidence, independence and maturity.

By the time children leave us in Year 6, we want them to be well-prepared for secondary school, proud of their achievements and excited about the opportunities ahead.

Above all, we want every child to leave Burnt Oak Junior School as a kind, respectful, resilient and aspirational young person who is ready to make a positive difference in the world.
