Burnt Oak Junior School was established in 1903 on Burnt Oak Lane in Sidcup. Originally part of the Greenwich and Deptford Children’s Home based at The Hollies—a former country house owned by the wealthy Lewin family—the school came under the control of London County Council following the Local Government Act of 1929, and was renamed Lamorbey Residential School. In 1936, responsibility for the school shifted to Kent County Council, and it became known as Burnt Oak Council School. At that time, the school had 295 pupils enrolled, including 244 children from the Lamorbey Children’s Home and 51 from the local area. Following the Education Act of 1944, it was renamed Burnt Oak County Primary School. In 1965, administration transferred once more—this time to the newly formed London Borough of Bexley. Today, it is known as Burnt Oak Junior School and continues to operate on its original site.

The Pioneer Academy Involvement

The Pioneer Academy Trust was formed when Stewart Fleming Primary School became an academy in 2011.  In May 2012, The Trust was asked by Bexley Local Authority to support Belvedere Junior School which then converted to an academy in April 2013.  The Trustees were once again approached by Bexley in the Summer Term of 2014 to support Burnt Oak Junior School which subsequently converted to an academy in July 2015.

Since then, more schools have joined the Pioneer Academy and there are 19 schools in total that make up the Trust.
